Why we invested: Kaleidoscope

BPI Backs Kaleidoscope in Creating the Next-Generation Platform for Podcasts

At Burda Principal Investments, we look for companies that are not just riding waves but creating them. While our roots lie in media, our portfolio today spans sectors from Marketplaces and Platforms (Vinted, Etsy) to Cybersecurity (NordVPN, Expel) and AI (Aleph Alpha, Modjo). This heritage continues to inspire us to seek out inventive media opportunities, leading us to invest in companies like Yoto, Kasagi Labo, and WaitWhat.

When we first encountered Kaleidoscope, we saw something remarkable: a small but incredibly talented team that had managed to carve out a distinctive position in the rapidly growing science and technology podcasting space, building what we believe will become the premium network in this category.

The Traction That Caught Our Attention

What immediately impressed us about Kaleidoscope was the velocity of their growth and the calibre of content they’ve achieved in the past three years. The company has launched over 20 shows and secured multiple high-profile production deals with industry leaders like iHeartMedia and Bloomberg. This is not just quantity – it’s quality at scale.

Their breakthrough show ON Musk featuring Walter Isaacson, an American author and journalist known for biographies of Elon Musk, Steve Jobs, and Albert Einstein, topped the Apple Podcasts chart upon release, demonstrating their ability to create must-listen content that captures both critical acclaim and mass appeal. But it’s the breadth of their successful programming that truly sets them apart:

The Last Soviet with NSYNC’s Lance Bass tells the extraordinary story of cosmonaut Sergei Krikalev, who spent 313 days stranded in space during the collapse of the Soviet Union. Bass, uniquely positioned as someone who trained as a Russian cosmonaut himself, brings unparalleled authenticity to this space history narrative.

Afghan Star with singer John Legend explores the remarkable story of Afghanistan’s talent show that gave hope during Taliban control, showcasing how music and culture persisted even in the darkest times.

Levittown represents their investigative prowess – a collaboration with Bloomberg and iHeart that explores AI exploitation in American high schools, featuring award-winning investigative journalists Olivia Carville and Margi Murphy.

Kill Switch with Emmy-winning journalist Dexter Thomas serves as a technology survival guide, making complex tech concepts accessible and culturally relevant.

These examples illustrate Kaleidoscope’s unique approach: they don’t just cover science and technology – they weave these subjects into compelling human narratives that resonate with broad audiences.

Positioning in a High-Growth Category

The science and technology podcasting category is experiencing significant growth, particularly among young, affluent, highly educated, and tech-savvy listeners. There’s a hunger among advertisers to be in front of quality content about the future backed by journalistic rigor. Kaleidoscope has positioned itself as the premium network in this space, targeting a demographic with strong advertiser appeal and high completion rates.

The co-founders describe their mission as creating “dispatches from the frontiers of knowledge” in “this sort of beautiful, energised, cool space where you can learn without feeling the chore of learning”. This philosophy has resulted in content that achieves the delicate balance of maintaining high listener engagement while delivering advertiser value.

Strategic Content and IP Advantages

What sets Kaleidoscope apart is their focus on high-quality IP ownership and direct audience control. They maintain ownership of RSS (a standard web feed format for distributing podcast episodes) feeds and build a curated network of high-impact limited series (e.g. ON Musk) as well as “always-on” content (e.g. TechStuff), establishing a strong early-mover advantage in the science and tech podcasting space.

Their content strategy extends beyond traditional podcasting. The company is actively developing its growing IP library into film and TV projects with Hollywood’s leading studios, with some already in development. This transmedia approach creates multiple revenue streams and extends the value of their storytelling investments.

The Team That Makes It Happen

The Kaleidoscope leadership team combines deep media expertise with proven track records: Oz Woloshyn (Co-Founder & CEO) brings Peabody and Emmy-award winning journalism credentials; Mangesh Hattikudur (Co-Founder) previously served as SVP of podcast development at iHeartMedia, where he launched critically acclaimed shows and developed relationships with major talent; Kate Osborn (Chief Strategy Officer) brings global media experience as former VP at VICE Media Group, where she created VICE Audio, the company’s global podcasting division. Constantinos “Costas” Linos (COO) adds business development expertise from his roles at Bertelsmann, Univision, and Fusion Media Group, with an MBA from INSEAD and Harvard undergraduate degree.

This team’s combined expertise and industry relationships have been instrumental in securing the high-impact partnerships that define Kaleidoscope’s success.

Outlook and Business Model Evolution

As growth investors we are investing in scalable commercial businesses, not just great media content. Kaleidoscope’s plans to add new business models including events while continuing to launch podcasts represent exactly the kind of diversification and scalability we look for as venture capitalists.

Rather than being dependent solely on advertising revenue, Kaleidoscope is building a platform that can monetise audiences across multiple touchpoints, from podcast advertising to live events to IP licensing. They’re also building out video offerings, creating additional monetisation opportunities that can scale efficiently.

Why This Investment Makes Sense

At BPI, we invest in companies building for the future, and Kaleidoscope is doing exactly that: creating a new category in podcasting that combines editorial integrity with cultural relevance. In a moment when audiences crave clarity around science and technology, Kaleidoscope is uniquely positioned to meet that demand on a global scale.
Our Series A investment, co-led with North Base Media and joined by prestigious investors including The Raine Group, former MTV leader Tom Freston, and Nimble Ventures, reflects our confidence in this team’s ability to build the defining platform for science and technology storytelling.
Kaleidoscope represents more than just a podcasting company – it’s a media platform positioned at the intersection of education, entertainment, and emerging technology. As science and technology increasingly shape our daily lives, the demand for thoughtful, engaging content that makes these complex topics accessible will only grow. Kaleidoscope is perfectly positioned to capture this opportunity and build lasting value in the process.
We’re excited to support their journey as they continue to redefine how we tell the stories of tomorrow.
