Martin Weiss

Managing Director & CEO

Martin heads Burda Principal Investments

Martin Weiss joined Burda in 2015 and heads Burda Principal Investments, addressing global investment opportunities in the consumer internet sector. Previously Martin was Executive Vice President Strategy and Corporate Development at international telecommunications and media company Millicom. Here, he was responsible for expanding and transforming the company’s digital activities in Latin America, the USA and Africa. Martin was previously Founding Partner at management consulting company Solon and ran their London office from 2008 to 2013. His work focused on developing digital growth strategies for international media companies and supporting leading private equity companies in mergers & acquisitions. From 1992 to 1996 Martin was with McKinsey&Co. Furthermore, he was member of the supervisory board of Tomorrow Focus AG from 2003 to 2015 and is currently on the board of Vinted.com and nebenan.de.

 

Christian Teichmann

Managing Director

Christian Teichmann, Managing Director

Christian Teichmann joined Burda in 2015 and is Managing Director of Burda Principal Investments. Prior to joining Burda, he was at Solon Management Consulting for over ten years as Partner and Head of the London office. Christian focused on business building as well as growth and investment strategies in TMT industries. Before that, he worked for investment banks Lazard and Greenhill. Christian holds degrees in economics from Universidad Pontificia Comillas in Madrid and ESB Reutlingen. Currently, he is on the supervisory boards of M.Gemi, Rockets of Awesome, NotOntheHighStreet and Bloom & Wild and a board observer at BaubleBar, Skillshare and WaitWhat.

 

Benita Krahforst

Principal

Benita Krahforst, Principal

Benita Krahforst joined Burda in 2016 and is a Principal of Burda Principal Investments. She joined from Deutsche Bank, where she has worked for four years within the investment banking / M&A teams in Frankfurt and London. During her time at Deutsche Bank, Benita has worked with corporate clients, institutional investors and private equity funds on M&A and capital market transactions within a broad range of industries. Benita studied at University of Mannheim (Business), Stockholm School of Economics, HEC Paris and Columbia University of New York (Management and Finance).

 

Thomas Kulcsar

Investment Manager

Thomas Kulcsar, Investment Manager

Thomas Kulcsar joined Burda in 2017 and is an Investment Manager of Burda Principal Investments. He previously worked at H.I.G. Capital, where he was within their private equity team in London for four years and then spent his last year permanently seconded to the management team of a portfolio company that was thereafter successfully exited. During his time at H.I.G. Capital, he focused on a broad range of sectors and was part of the founding team of their K-12, international education platform in Europe. Thomas studied Political Science and Management at McGill University in Montreal.

 

John Greger

Head of Product

John Greger, Head of Product

John Greger joined Burda in 2019 as Head of Product for Burda Principal Investments. Before joining Burda, he was CPO at Vinted, leading the product and IT teams during a successful turnaround phase. Prior to this, he worked as CPO or Head of Product for Rocket Internet, Mister Spex and Immobilienscout24. His earlier experience as Strategy Consultant includes positions at Lexington and Lexta Consulting. John studied at the WHU – Otto Beisheim School of Management, San Diego State University, Université Nice and the European Business School (ebs) and holds a MBA.

 

Peter Kennedy

Senior Adviser

Peter Kennedy, Senior Adviser

Peter Kennedy joined Burda Asia in 1998, where he was tasked with developing the company’s various businesses in Asia. He is currently Senior Adviser to Burda Principal Investments. Previously, Peter developed and oversaw joint ventures in Taiwan with SPH, Indonesia with the Alisjahbana family, and Korea with Design House Inc. He was also closely involved in the set up of a print joint venture with the Hindustan Times Group in Delhi and helped to acquire one of the regions most successful luxury publishing companies, Prestige. In the digital space, he has worked on the company’s investment into contextual advertising in Korea and most recently in the investment into Vietnam’s leading browser based search business, CocCoc. Prior to joining Burda, Peter worked in New York for the Economist, where he developed the magazine’s US market penetration strategy, now its largest market, and for Scientific American. He has extensive Asian business experience in Japan, Korea, China, India, Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore and Hong Kong. Peter received his BA in business studies from the City of London University and served in the Special Air Service (SAS) while in the UK military.

 

Albert Shyy

Principal

Albert Shyy, Principal

Albert joined Burda in 2017 and heads Burda Principal Investments' Singapore office. Previously he was at GREE Ventures from 2014 to 2017, where he led the fund's investment team in Southeast Asia and India as Principal while working closely with many of its portfolio companies including Kudo, Berrybenka, and Bukalapak. Prior to this, he served as a Director at Lazada Group, Southeast Asia’s largest ecommerce retailer, helping build the company’s Marketplace business across the region. Other professional experience includes co-founding an online menswear company in the US called AlbertMing Inc. and spending 5 years as a consultant at Monitor Group across the US and Asia. He completed his MBA at the University of California, Berkeley and studied at the University of Pennsylvania with dual degrees in economics and systems engineering. He currently sits on the board of Priceza, Zilingo, and Carsome.

 

Joseph Thia

Investment Manager

Joseph Thia, Investment Manager

Joseph joined Burda as an Investment Manager of Burda Principal Investments in 2018 after he returned to Singapore from a 2 year stint in Traveloka, the largest homegrown OTA in Southeast Asia. At Traveloka, he was in a growth marketing role based out of the Jakarta HQ that also required him to lead marketing teams in Indonesia, Vietnam and the Philippines. Prior to that, he worked in WPP's Transaction Services team and Ernst & Young Transaction Advisory Services, performing financial due diligence on companies across the Asia Pacific. In his early days after graduation from Nanyang Business School with an Accounting degree, he started out as an auditor with Ernst & Young.

 

Edwin Mak

Analyst

Edwin Mak, Analyst

Edwin joined Burda in 2017 as an Analyst of Burda Principal Investments in the Singapore office. Previously, he spent a year at online fashion retailer Tokyo Fashion, where he focused on partnerships and market expansion in Southeast Asia for its multi-label portfolio. Prior to that, Edwin completed internships across multiple industries and at companies such as GREE Ventures, Wilmar International and APL. He graduated from Nanyang Technological University with a business degree and major in finance.

 

Lindsey Chen

Analyst

Lindsey Chen, Analyst

Lindsey joined Burda in 2018 as an Analyst of Burda Principal Investments in the Singapore office. Previously, she spent one and a half year at Uber APAC regional office in Singapore, where she took on multiple roles including new market launch, operations, and marketing. Prior to that, Lindsey worked in PriceWaterhouseCoopers New York office for three years, focusing on financial service, pharmaceutical and retail industries. She completed her MBA at INSEAD and studied at the University of Virginia with dual degrees in Finance and Economics.

 

Amelia Townsend

Principal

Amelia Townsend, Principal

Amelia joined Burda in 2018 and is a Principal of Burda Principal Investments in London. Previously she was an Investor at Unilever Ventures from 2015-2018 whose portfolio includes consumer investments such as Gousto, True Botanicals, Blow Beauty, and Instacart. Amelia was actively involved with the portfolio serving as Board Observer to seven of the companies across Europe and the US. Prior to this, she was a Strategy Consultant within the M&A practice at Accenture for four years focussing on technology and consumer goods. Amelia completed a BA Hons degree in Philosophy at Durham University and previously founded a consumer domestic services marketplace, and a non-profit organisation focussed on women in work.

 

Natalie Schmitke

Investment Manager

Natalie Schmitke, Investment Manager

Natalie joined Burda in 2017 and is an Investment Manager of Burda Principal Investments in London. Previously she was the CFO of a technology start-up company focused on natural language processing in New York City. Prior to that, she worked in the investment banking / M&A teams at J.P. Morgan in London. Natalie studied at WHU – Otto Beisheim School of Management (Business) and completed her MBA at Harvard Business School.

 

Thomas Juvin

Investment Manager

Thomas Juvin, Investment Manager

Thomas joined Burda in 2017 and is an Investment Manager of Burda Principal Investments. He previously spent four years in the investment banking division of Nomura in London, advising on a variety of M&A and capital market transactions within the consumer & retail sectors. His earlier experience includes positions at Apax Partners and Deloitte in Paris. Thomas holds an MSc in Management from EMLyon Business School.

 

Vincent Rose

Analyst

Vincent Rose, Analyst

Vincent Rose joined Burda in 2019 as an Investment Analyst of Burda Principal Investments after completing a summer internship in 2018.
Prior to joining Burda, he gathered experience through internships in various industries, most recently with Bayer Inhouse Consulting focusing on technology evaluation & integration. His earlier experience includes Operations Management at the Berlin start-up Movinga, as well as practice in the field of private equity.
